Desmond Tutu Diversity Trust Poster Gallery

The Desmond Tutu Diversity Trust is proud to have been involved in worthy events for worthwhile causes, recorded below for posterity.

Posters from the Trust Schools Diversity Poster Campaign

In support of the newly launched National Policy on Religion and Education, the Desmond Tutu Diversity Trust wants to contribute to the recognition and celebration of the rich cultural diversity of South African society. In so doing, it wishes to enable all teachers and pupils in South Africa to know and understand the diversity of religious and other world views that are held by their fellow citizens. To this end the Trust wants to provide schools with visual material that will illustrate important elements in the different religious traditions of South Africa.

In producing posters depicting religious diversity in South Africa, the Trust wants to adhere to the assessment standards for the learning area Life Orientation, as identified and outlined by the National Curriculum Statement. Accordingly, two phases are envisaged.

In Phase I, to which the present quotation applies, a poster depicting symbols, important days, diet, clothing and decorations for each of the following religious traditions is proposed:

• African Religion
• Baha'i Faith
• Buddhism
• Christianity
• Hinduism
• Islam
• Judaism

In Phase II, significant places and buildings, festivals and customs and oral traditions and scriptures of the same range of religions will be depicted.

The posters will in the first place highlight, in the case of Phase I, those elements that will be introduced in the Foundation Phase of the General Education and Training Band, and in the case of Phase II, those that will be dealt with in the Intermediate Phase. However, the posters will be designed in such a way that it will supply relevant information to all teachers and pupils in both the General Education Band as well as in the Further Education and Training Band. Each poster will, in addition to visual material, also contain relevant commentary.

Furthermore, each set of seven posters will be accompanied by a manual that will provide the necessary historical background to each religious tradition and that will render a thorough explanation of the significance of the visual elements in each poster.
